Cultivate a Rhythm of Seeking

Getting in God’s word can be intimidating. Where do I start? What if I don’t understand? There are lots of questions. But if your heart is to know God, he will show himself to you! That is a prayer he will always answer. Don’t give up! Keep coming back. Here is a guide on how to start.

Get a blank piece of paper or a blank journal and open your bible.

  1. Pray. Ask God to give you insight into His word and to bind the enemy from distracting or confusing you.

  2. Praise - write on the paper a couple of things you are thankful to God for.

  3. Commit things that are out of your control over to the care of God. - We can’t fix everything. Most things are out of our control. God cares about these things. We must give them to him. He will take them. Write them down after your praises.

  4. Read. Read 1 chapter of God’s word. Any chapter. It’s ok even if it’s not in order. Just flip it open and start anywhere God leads you to.

  5. Pay attention. What verse(s) stood out above the rest? Which one(s) made you curious? Write it down.

  6. Reflect. What does that verse(s) you picked say about the character of God? Write it down.

  7. Apply. How do those verses apply to your life? Do they inspire/challenge/encourage you? How? Write it down.

  8. Pray. Write a prayer in response to what you read and what God showed you through the reading and reflecting.

  9. Praise. How have you seen evidence of God working in your life through this rhythm, in people around you, in your heart, in your mind, and in your spirit? Write it down so that you can remember later and praise him again!
